Editor: GetFramework.Net was created to fill a void for application developers that build for the Microsoft .NET Framework. Part of the responsibility of your application installation is to ensure that your customer has the .Net Framework installed on their PC before you install your managed code application. Unfortunately, there is no easy way of doing that using the standard setup project provided with Visual Studio .Net 2002 or 2003. Consequently, some developers have resorted to including the entire 22 MB dotnetfx.exe redistributable with their setup package. Obviously that's not a perfect solution if the installation is to be downloaded from the web. There are application suites on the market to solve this problem. Some of them are "linker" types that analyze your application and include only the files that it needs in the installation. Others do what GetFramework.Net does. That is, they check for the existence of the .Net Framework on the client PC, download it if not present, and complete the installation. These other solutions are great but have one big drawback - PRICE. These solutions will set you back anywhere from $400 to $1500 for a single developer license. Enter GetFramework.Net. A reasonably priced utility that solves a reasonably simple problem.
